From Factory Floor to Mountain Peak: The Story of Leo J.
It was 2014, a harsh winter in the Pacific Northwest. Our founder, Leo J., was hiking seven miles alone in the Cascade Mountains when the shoulder strap of his "high-end" backpack suddenly snapped. In the freezing rain, he was left clutching his gear, his back aching, his supplies soaked through.
At that moment, Leo realized a harsh reality: most backpacks on the market were either overpriced, fashion items lacking true durability, or over-designed professional gear incompatible with modern urban life.
Born into a family business (Huajing Trading) with decades of experience in high-end textile manufacturing, Leo understood that the soul of a product lies in its structure. For the next two years, he dedicated himself to three aspects: stitching, fluidity, and load-bearing capacity.
He disassembled hundreds of bags, testing the limits of YKK zippers and the hydrophobic properties of ripstop nylon. He wasn't just building a bag; he was designing a "silent companion" that would never disappoint its owner.
“I wanted to create a hiking backpack that I could trust to survive on a ridge, and that I could proudly take into a Manhattan conference room,” Leo said.
In 2016, the HJ RUGGED brand was born. Leo insists on controlling the entire supply chain—from sourcing 2000mm waterproof fabric to final stress testing of the AirFlow carrying system. By eliminating middlemen and focusing on providing adventurers with high-quality products, he makes top-tier gear accessible.
Today, Leo still personally tests every new product prototype. Whether it's our durable mountaineering backpack or our minimalist business laptop bag, every product carries the same promise: it will never let you down.
